Valerie Gatto was crowned Miss Pennsylvania 2014. She was conceived in the stranger-rape of her 19-year-old mother. Her mother escaped the rapist when a “bright flash of light” appeared, and she had the opportunity to run. Miss Gatto says, had the light not appeared, her mother would have been “murdered.” She thinks of the light as her, and her mother’s, guardian angel.

At a very young age, her mother told her: “Something bad happened to me. A very bad man hurt me, but God gave me you,” she said on the “Today” show…

Miss Gatto’s mother put aside her plans to attend law school, and raised her daughter, living with her parents. She was raised in church, with faith, and with “a close support system.”
